826michigan
826michigan is part of a non-profit organization that aims to improve the writing and literacy skills of people ages 6-18. All of the services they provide are free to anyone who wants to attend. They “believe that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. To make that a reality, [they] provide drop-in tutoring, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications.” They also believe that fun and student interest are essential to learning.
Big Brothers Big Sisters
Big Brothers Big Sisters is dedicated to helping children “realize their potential and build their futures.” A “Big” is matched one-on-one with their “Little.” They are matched based on “location, personalities and preferences.” All you have to do is get together for a few hours each month to make a lasting impact on a Little’s life. Hanging out can be anything the two of you enjoy like playing catch or going to a museum.
Boys and Girls Club
Boys and Girls Club provides “high quality youth development programs, sporting activities, events and a safe haven for children from all walks of life.” They help children ages 6-18 (grades 1-12) “grow into responsible, self-reliant and caring individuals.”
Mentor2Youth
“Our mission is to help support and guide our youth down a path of academic and personal achievement. We understand the importance of an education but, believe this must be supplemented with life-long learning skills to truly impact youth. We are tireless in our efforts to make a difference in the lives of our youth. We believe the kids are our future but, know without the correct moral guidance, that future can be dim.”
Washtenaw Literacy
“Washtenaw Literacy's mission is to provide free literacy instruction customized to the needs of adults throughout Washtenaw County, utilizing a trained network of volunteer tutors. It is our vision to eliminate illiteracy in Washtenaw County. For over 40 years we have been empowering adults through improved literacy. Since our founding in 1971, we have served over 20,000 learners and trained and fully supported over 10,000 volunteer tutors.”
YMCA
“We believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for life. Because of the Y, more young people in neighborhoods around the nation are taking a greater interest in learning and making smarter life choices. At the Y, children and teens learn values and positive behaviors, and can explore their unique talents and interests, helping them realize their potential. That makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow.”
